The 5 Worst Things You Can Do As A Writer
Few things have happened recently that really grind the gears. This is part rant and writing advice that I hope helps.
These aren’t the absolute worst things you can do. I’ll left a few notable things out due to time.
But these things are still bad, I’d advise avoiding them. If you disagree, feel free to comment why.
Let’s not waste any time. Here are the 5 worst things a writer, or really any creative, can do. To their story and their audience.
Insulting The Audience
This is becoming more common when it shouldn’t be. Don’t insult or demonize your entire audience.
There will be idiots but never think that’s the norm. Check yourself first just in case before attacking your audience.
This goes double when they pay you. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
Why insult the people kind enough to support you? It’s usually for trivial reasons too.
Don’t be like this, aim to be humble. Writers that get paid enough to live off of it are lucky. Don’t spit in the face of that luck.
Don’t take for guarantee your enviable success.
Killing The Main Plot
Can you think of story that valued a sub-plot over the main one? How about a story that sacrificed the plot at the love triangle altar?
This is like one of the points below, but don’t kill the reason people read your story in the first place.
Don’t turn a horror thriller into a romantic erotica.
If your feel the urge to write something spicy, take a break with flash fiction. I don’t think anything kills a story faster than knocking down it’s main pillar.
Well, maybe one thing can kill it faster.
Hating Your Own Story
This is becoming more common too but there’s some good reasons. If you’re forced to work on a story that’s become boring, hating it makes sense.
This is for those writers that take on projects that they know they’ll hate. Unless your desperate, it’s not something you should do.
