Defensive magic is underrated and surprisingly versatile.

Every magic type has some form of defensive magic and all magic gear has some weaved into it.

But do you know what the craziest thing about this magic type is?

It can also attack! Defense is the best offensive, and I’ll prove it.

But first, let’s cover the basics of this magic.

What Does It Do (Defense)

We all know the vanilla shields and wards.

These spells are designed to either defend against spells or melee.

They can be enchanted onto equipment to increase their defensive abilities. You can make cloth resistant to swords or fire.

A lot of defensive spells can fall under other magic types.

Examples for other magic type’s defense spells include:

  • Fire Wall (Elemental)
  • Blood Dome (Blood Magic)
  • Skeleton Wall (Necromancy
  • Steel Skin (Alteration)

That’s all cool but that’s not true defensive magic. That’s just those magic types playing defense.

Real defensive magic does more than just block, it seals, banishes, reflects and more.

The purpose of defensive magic is usually to counter the magical world. Defending against melee damage is easy when compared to magical threats.

A big wall of mana is enough for melee but magical defense uses specific magic circles with it too.

So when fighting magic creatures and mages, defense mages would develop spells to deal with them easier.

Outside of lowering magic damage, defense magic can also seal, repel and banish magical beings. This includes ghosts, possessions, and demons.

This effect is usually done by magic circles but you can write it as something else.

For mages, defensive magic covers anti-magic, reflect, and spell absorption through shields. The absorption can either heal or increase magic power.
